Obama and His Coffee Cup–A Freudian Case Study?

September 24th, 2014

Watching President Obama “salute” a Marine with his coffee cup as he exited Marine One yesterday gave me an idea.

Perhaps President Obama actually wants to be impeached.

Now I’m not saying he is actively working towards that goal. And I really don’t think it would be a good idea at this point for Republicans to actually impeach him.  As we learned in the 1990’s, sometimes impeachment turns goats into heroes.

No, I don’t think he wants to be nor should he be impeached.  I just think that it’s quite possible that subliminally he is really sick of this job, and he’s looking for a way out.

Think about it.

What Commander-in-Chief who takes his job even half-seriously would give a tip of his coffee cup to a waiting Marine?

That’s not all.

Just a few weeks earlier, Obama grimly announced Jim Foley’s beheading at the hands of terrorists and then went out and played golf.  In fact, he not only played golf, he made a point of having a laughing rollicking good time playing golf.  Honestly, I’ve played golf and been around lots of golfers and few of them ever look as incredibly happy as Obama did that day.  In fact, most of the time even the average recreational golfer looks ready to take on a terrorist himself when out on the links.

Yes, for some reason Obama is putting on a very big show lately of not particularly wanting to play president anymore.

It kind of reminds me of the Peter Gibbons character in the movie, Office Space.  At one point in the film, Gibbons tries everything he can think of to appear indifferent and incompetent at his job only to be rewarded for all his bad behavior.

Now I’m no psychologist, but I’ve seen this sort of odd behavior in other famous people. The closest example of what Obama may be now experiencing is Prince Harry who for years did one decidedly unroyal thing after another.

Remember?  He went to a costume party dressed as a Nazi.  That certainly didn’t go over well, particularly with the Brits who personally remembered hiding in the Tube from Nazi bombing during the Blitz.  A few more gaffes later and just when you think we’d seen the end of his bad behavior, naked pictures surfaced of the prince playing strip billiards in Las Vegas.  Evidently, the Queen was not amused, and he’s cleaned up his act considerably since then.

But Prince Harry’s behavior seemed to scream out, “I don’t really want to be in this position.  I don’t want to be royal anymore. Perhaps if I just shock everyone I won’t have to be.”

A similar thing happens when children don’t particularly want to do something.  They “act out” and engage in all sorts of inappropriate behavior in hope of being dismissed from whatever they don’t want to do.

Since Obama won’t be impeached and he has two years left in his term, let’s hope he gets through this difficult phase he’s experiencing if that’s what this is.

And if in the meantime the president suddenly flies off to Las Vegas, let’s hope that the city slogan rings true and that whatever happens there truly stays there.
