We’re just a few days into 2013 and with that many of us are assessing which New Year’s resolutions we’re going to keep—if any.
One of my New Year’s resolutions is writing and more writing. My editor, Monica, is a very patient and nice person. She’s encouraging me to blog more often and I intend to oblige this coming year. Ultimately, I also want my own talk show, The Dee Dee Show. Being ever the optimist, I know that this will happen. I’m not sure what the format or medium will be, but I’m confident eventually Chelsea, Dave, and Conan will be checking me out (okay—maybe a little too optimistic but you have to reach high in life to really get anywhere).
I’m thrilled that our Red Girls Salon audience is growing daily. Some of you may have noticed our podcast button is marked “Coming Soon.” I’m working on it now, and soon I’ll add podcasts with information and commentary I hope you’ll enjoy.
I’m a big believer that goals are important, and they should always be infused with a strong dose of positive thinking. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m also a big risk taker. For me, 2013 will be no exception. I’m a proponent of going outside your comfort zone, even if it means being a little over the top reckless and adventurous sometimes. What’s the worst thing that can happen? You fail? Big deal. Just learn from it, pick yourself up, and begin again. Otherwise, you’re likely to end your life with lots of regret about what you didn’t do or try to do. I believe you end up regretting more in life what you didn’t do than what you may have done wrong. With that, I challenge every one of you to take some chances this year. Don’t put limits on yourself—give it a try. I bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
I’m an example of this philosophy in action. A few years ago, I dropped everything I was doing to go to Texas to work on the Bush presidential campaign. That risk paid off. I ended up working for the President of the United States in the White House—a small fraternity of people who have the honor of being in the epicenter of power in this country. Now I’m taking on a new challenge. I’m spending a lot of time in New York City these days where I’m working to achieve my goals in media. In the short time I’ve been doing this, I’ve clearly come to appreciate the challenge of working here. The lyrics of New York, New York are true—“if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.” I’m loving every minute of the challenge of being here.
Here’s my final bit of advice for this year. If you’ve never been to New York—go! There are many wonderful places in this country, but New York City is truly magical. (I’ll also note that my favorite rural place is Madison, Indiana, a picturesque river town I’ll blog about soon).
So there it is. . . writing this blog, doing The Dee Dee Show, and oh yeah—writing a book (the topic is tba) are my goals this year.
What are your 2013 goals?
